The best AI meta description generator for Shopify depends on two things: which pages need one, and where the facts will come from. A store that imported 3,000 supplier products and never touched the Meta description field has a different problem from a store with 40 hand-written products whose search snippets just don't get clicked. What a meta description can and can't do
A meta description is the short summary you write for a page's search result. On Shopify it sits in each product's Search engine listing section, and when it's blank, Shopify uses the product description, which on an imported product is often supplier text. Google has said it doesn't use the description meta tag for ranking, but in its words, accurate meta descriptions can improve clickthrough. Google builds most snippets from the page itself and sometimes uses yours when it describes the page more accurately, so different searches can show different text.
Google also sets no length limit: it truncates snippets as needed, typically to fit the device width. Shopify recommends about 160 characters, with the important part first. In a generator, look for facts from the product instead of filler and a different description for every page. Google says identical descriptions aren't helpful and encourages generating them programmatically for large catalogs, as long as the results read well and vary. Then check for a review step, an undo and which page types it covers.
How we picked

Norlif AI Descriptions, Titles is a Shopify app that rewrites product titles, descriptions and meta descriptions and assigns Shopify product categories in bulk, built for imported and dropshipping catalogs. It writes a different meta description for every product from the facts already in its title and description, capped at 160 characters and in your store's language (100+ languages). The SEO page title comes with the title rewrite. It was formerly called Norlif AI Product Enhancer.
A meta description on its own costs 1 credit, so the 100 free credits cover 100 products if that's all you need. A full rewrite costs up to 3 credits per product: 1 for the title (SEO page title included), 1 for the description (meta description included) and 1 for the category, charged only when the product had none. The 100 free credits cover about 33 products. After that, one-time packs run from $5 for 500 credits to $99 for 19,800, and failed or skipped products aren't charged.

SEO HERO AI Meta Tag Generator is a Shopify app from Designful Inc built around one job: writing meta titles and meta descriptions for products, collections and published blog articles. It was the first result in our App Store searches for "ai meta description" and "meta description generator", and it has 5.0 stars from 48 reviews since January 2025.
Standard models cost 1 credit per page (stronger ones 2 to 4), and failed or skipped pages aren't charged. The free plan gives 25 credits once; Basic is $5 a month for 150 credits, Premium $15 for 500 and Premium Plus $35 for 2,000. Premium adds custom instructions and Auto-Pilot for new products, Premium Plus imports real queries from Google Search Console, and a dry-run preview shows sample tags before anything is saved.
The catch: There's no one-click restore: backups of product metadata can only be downloaded on Premium or Premium Plus, and putting old tags back is manual. The store-wide Bulk Update also skips collections, which you generate by selection.

SEO King is a Shopify SEO app from Engage Apps, on the App Store since 2017 with 4.8 stars from 542 reviews, whose AI writer covers meta titles and meta descriptions for products, collections, articles and pages. Its meta description tool has a setting we didn't find in the other apps here: with Google Search Console connected, it tracks click-through rates and can automatically rewrite descriptions that fall below 1%.
Paid plans include unlimited AI text and are priced by store size: $9.99 a month for 500 pages, $13.99 for 5,000 and $16.99 for 20,000, or $69.99 to $99.99 a year. It can trim descriptions to 150 to 160 characters and skip fields you edited by hand.
The catch: Its AI text docs list OpenAI's GPT-4.1 nano as the default model, with stronger ones such as Claude Sonnet 4.5 for yearly members. A bulk update with overwrite switched on replaces every meta description, hand-written ones included, unless you set overwrite conditions first.
Who it's for: Stores with steady search traffic that want weak snippets found and rewritten automatically, for a fixed monthly price.

Avada AI SEO Image Optimizer is an all-in-one Shopify SEO app (4.9 from 4,680 reviews) whose AI content hub writes meta titles and meta descriptions for all products and collections in one run. We're only rating that writer here.
Avada's help center lists meta titles and meta descriptions at 1 AI credit per page. The free plan includes 100 AI credits and Pro ($34.95 a month) 1,000 a month, and one-time packs start at $5.99 for 500 credits that never expire. You set the language and an optional instruction for tone or keywords, can skip pages that already have tags, and review and edit the results before applying them.
The catch: For meta tags alone it's a lot of app: Pro's credits come bundled with speed and image tools you may not need. The help center mentions a history of past runs but doesn't describe restoring old tags.
Who it's for: Stores that already run Avada for SEO and want its AI to fill in meta titles and descriptions for products and collections.

ChatGPT AI Product Description by Profitonium is a Shopify product copy app, on the App Store since 2021 with 4.9 stars from 529 reviews, that writes SEO titles and meta descriptions alongside product descriptions and titles, in bulk or automatically as new products arrive. Its paid plans list product meta descriptions as a feature.
The difference is where the facts come from. It can read product images and search the web, which the listing labels Pro features, and it offers ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude models, with the choice depending on your plan. The free plan gives 100 credits a month, and paid plans cost $19 (2,000 credits), $49 (11,000) and $249 (110,000) a month.
The catch: Credits aren't a fixed number of products: the model, image input and web search all change the cost, so check the estimate before a big run. The vendor also advises checking results against your real product details before saving.
Who it's for: Stores whose product pages are too thin to write a meta description from, and stores adding new products every week.

Shopify Sidekick is the AI assistant built into the Shopify admin and included with your plan, which makes it Shopify's own free way to get AI help with a meta description. Each product has a Meta description field under Search engine listing (click the pencil icon), where you can also write one by hand. Shopify Magic's description writer won't fill it: its feature page lists SEO titles and SEO descriptions as not supported.
Sidekick can fill in fields anywhere in the admin on request, marks what it changed in purple and waits for your approval. One of Shopify's own sample prompts asks it to take a top-selling product and optimize it for SEO. Its help pages don't mention meta descriptions by name, and features and usage limits vary by plan.
The catch: Shopify's help pages don't describe a catalog-wide meta description run or a way to undo one, so treat it as a tool for your best sellers, not for 2,000 imported products.

ChatGPT is OpenAI's general AI assistant, and paired with Shopify's product CSV export it's the do-it-yourself way to write meta descriptions for a whole catalog. Export your products, paste batches of rows into ChatGPT with your rules for length and tone, ask for an SEO description per row, and import the file with "Overwrite products with matching handles" turned on.
Shopify's CSV rules decide how safe this is. An update file needs the URL handle and Title columns, the SEO description column takes up to 320 characters and SEO title up to 70. Include only the columns you mean to change: with overwrite on, a blank cell in an included column wipes that field.
The catch: It's slow, careful work, and ChatGPT only knows what's in the rows you paste, so thin products get generic meta descriptions. Keep the original export as your backup.
Who it's for: Stores with a few hundred products or fewer, some spreadsheet comfort and more time than budget.
