Numbers are characters. It also flags empty meta descriptions, empty page titles on long product titles, and page titles or meta descriptions that are the same on several products, which is common when a catalog comes from one supplier. Is my product file uploaded anywhere?
No. The checker reads the CSV in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. Close the tab and the data is gone.
Why does it warn at 60 and 160 when Shopify allows 70 and 320?
Shopify accepts 70 characters in a page title and 320 in a meta description, but Google cuts search results to fit the screen, at roughly 60 and 160 characters on desktop. Text past that point is hidden behind an ellipsis, or Google writes its own snippet.
What happens when the page title is empty?
Shopify themes build the page title from the product title and your shop name. That is fine for short titles. A long supplier title plus the shop name gets cut off in search results, which is why the checker flags empty page titles on products whose title is over 60 characters.
What happens when the meta description is empty?
Google builds the snippet from the product page, usually the start of the description. If the description opens with a shipping notice, a size chart or supplier boilerplate, that becomes your search snippet.
Which export does it read?
The standard Shopify product export: Products, Export, all products, CSV for Excel, Numbers or other spreadsheet programs. It reads the Title, URL handle, SEO title and SEO description columns, and the older Handle, SEO Title and SEO Description names too. Variant rows are skipped, so each product is counted once.
Can I fix the products in the spreadsheet?
Yes. Edit the SEO title and SEO description columns, keep URL handle and Title, delete the other columns and import the file with the option to overwrite existing products. A blank cell in a column you import overwrites the value in your store, so keep an untouched copy of the export.
